Off and Running

The media declared that in an election year Labor Day is the traditional start of the campaign season.

But this campaign to unseat the current President started about 10 seconds after he was declared the winner in 2016. The assault on all things Trump has been non-stop.  Starting with the Democrat funded and now debunked Steele dossier, then Mueller investigation into Russian election interference, followed by an impeachment proceeding that went nowhere, and now being blamed for a Chinese flu virus that no Democrat took seriously until it was politically expedient to do so.

The candidates for national leadership had an interesting weekend that wasn’t reported equally in the national media…but that’s not surprising.

Former Vice President Biden found himself in Pennsylvania speaking to veterans and union members, at one point trying to fit in the “sucker for being in the military story” from the Atlantic magazine. It was an awkward attempt to continue a Trump bashing-storyline, that has been roundly denied by 15 individuals, who were with the President in France. Most bizarre was his rift on fast food workers. Biden said the following:

“You had thousands of employees making an hourly wage having to sign non-compete agreements. So if you work at Burger King, you can’t go across town to McDonald’s to try and get five more cents. All designed to do nothing, just keep wages down, you could not go. It’s not like you have a secret, these are people making an hourly wage. Just doing their job. They were told they can’t even bargain!”

The Former Vice President’s claim was fact checked and there isn’t a shred of truth to it. Yet, were there any reports of this utter nonsense coming from a Presidential candidate? Not a word.  How in the does this happen? Simple, there is a layer of loving press insulation around Joe Biden that shields him from his own inexplicable remarks when off the teleprompter.  Even his own personal White House stenographer, Mike McCormick said, “He’s lost a step and he doesn’t seem to have the same mental acuity as he did four years ago.” McCormick worked with the former Vice President from 2011 to 2017.

Meanwhile, Senator Kamala Harris was in Wisconsin where she met with members of the Blake family whose son, Jacob Blake Jr, was shot by Police while resisting arrest. She told reporters on Monday after meeting with the family in Milwaukee, “They’re an incredible family.” According to attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents the Blake family the Senator told Jacob Blake Jr. on Monday that she is “proud of him and how he is working through his pain”.

Naturally the media failed to report that Jacob Blake Sr. has a long history of racism and anti-Semitism, or that his son had an outstanding warrant for sexual assault and other charges. An incredible family indeed.

President Trump had a news conference on Labor Day and fielded numerous hostile questions from the White House press corps.  Former Ambassador to Germany Rick Grenell, last week reminded them nobody listens to them anymore. Nevertheless, the President answered every question fired at him for over 45 minutes. It’s interesting to note that every time he has questions shouted at him by the press, he answers them. Joe Biden on the other hand, took no questions from the national press over the weekend.

Vice President Mike Pence was also in Wisconsin meeting with the Dairyland Power Cooperative. He was speaking about jobs and the positive effects of the new trade deal with Canada that eliminated tariffs on American dairy products.  The Vice President did entertain questions from the local media unlike Senator Harris who said “I think we’re done here” when an opportunity to answer inquiries from local reporters was presented.

By all accounts, most Americans know any hope for fair coverage of this election simply isn’t going to happen. That was amply demonstrated over the past holiday weekend. It’s truly unfortunate that a blatherskite like Joe Biden doesn’t get the same scrutiny the President does.

Sadly, that’s the nature of the press in America.  Who can report the facts accurately, without coloring them with their personal bias? No one, it appears.
